The birthstone for April is Diamonds, the most sought-after of all the gemstones. Usually clear white in colour, diamonds can also be found in various shades, including pink, yellow and black. The birthstones for May are Emerald and Agate, however, Emeralds are by far the most recognisable. Emeralds are a highly precious gemstone known for their rich green hue and unique texture. The birthstone for June is Pearl. Pearls aren’t technically stones, but hard spherical objects produced within the soft tissue of a mollusc or other animal. July: Cancer / Leo Birthstone
The birthstones for July are Onyx and Ruby. Onyx is usually a striking black colour, while ruby comes in many shades of red ranging from a pinkish raspberry red to a deep rogue red. August: Leo / Virgo Birthstone
The birthstones for August are Carnelian or Peridot, with Peridot being the most commonly occurring. Often mistaken for a lightly-coloured Emerald thanks to its yellowish-green tone, the Peridot's colour varies depending on the iron content of the gem. September: Virgo / Libra Birthstone
The birthstone for September is Chrysolite or Sapphire. However, Sapphires are probably the best known out of the two. Much like diamonds, Sapphires come in all shades of the rainbow, however, black and royal blue are likely the most popular. Representing royalty, opulence, trust, loyalty and romance, the late Princess Diana famously wore a sapphire engagement ring that is now sported by her daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.

October: Libra / Scorpio Birthstone
The birthstone for October is Opal. Precious opal is an iridescent layer of mineraloid found in the fissures of rocks like sandstone and basalt. It is also the national gemstone of Australia with South Australia being the Opal capital of the world. Opals are seen as a very mystical stone with associations to hope, purity, innocence, loyalty and truth.

November: Scorpio / Sagittarius Birthstone
The birthstones for November are yellow Topaz and Citrine with Citrine likely being the most popular. A yellowish-brown stone and therefore looks similar to its more valuable cousin, Topaz, the Citrine stone symbolises joy, happiness, prosperity and creativity, which is not at all surprising given its very sunny and inviting orange hue.

Tanzanite is perhaps the most intriguing of the bunch as not only is it one of the most recently discovered gemstones, but is exceptionally rare given it can only be found in one section of the globe (Tanzania).
